Remember those old school projectors they used to have at school? Whenever the projector was brought out in class, I knew I would have fun. The teachers let us go up and write on the projector, and it felt more collaborative. This is the blackboard in business. As a marketer, you will likely have many brainstorming sessions where you design landing pages, compose copy, and create a strategy for a campaign. And brainstorming sessions and the whiteboard go together like peanut butter and jelly. In this post, we’ll dive into the whiteboard and learn how you can use this process to improve your brainstorming sessions.

What is the blackboard?
The whiteboard is the collaborative process during brainstorming sessions on a whiteboard. This can be done remotely or in person. Practically, the whiteboard sessions use a tool where you can draw, post sticky notes, chat, send files, or write notes. Virtual whiteboards should have the same benefits as the in-person whiteboard: each team member can comment, edit and share.
While whiteboard sessions are great, it’s easy to lose control over a brainstorming session. For a successful whiteboard session, we’ve put together some tips.
1. Be creative.
One of the best parts of a whiteboard session is that it allows your team to get creative. People can share documents, post sticky notes as reminders, and share their ideas with the team. When you’re in person, it’s fun to let everyone on your team use the board, so everyone has a chance to write notes and share their thoughts.
2. Stay focused.
With any brainstorming session, it’s easy to lose sight of what the goal is. To stay focused, we suggest that you write your goal across the top of your whiteboard, so everyone can see and know what they are supposed to do. When ideas come up that are off topic, write them down in a section to the side for the ideas to follow.
3. Encourage a meaningful conversation.
Brainstorming sessions also allow teams to have meaningful conversations about different ideas. No idea is too small and everyone should feel safe speaking their mind. The goal of a whiteboard session is to engage and collaborate with your team members. It is supposed to be interactive. These sessions also help people feel heard and that their ideas are taken into account.
4. Keep the board organized.
When you are running a whiteboard session, it is important to keep the whiteboard organized. Although this is brainstorming, your ideas should be labeled in sections, so that everyone knows which idea belongs to which topics. This is also where you can add a side section just for “off topic” ideas. You’ll still want to write them down, even if it doesn’t have to do with the topic at hand, so you can come back to later and keep the meeting focused. Now that we know what the whiteboard is and how to be successful when you’re running a meeting, let’s review some tools. whiteboard to help you succeed in a virtual brainstorming session.
As we discussed earlier, the whiteboard can also be done remotely. It does not have to be an in-person activity. In fact, remote whiteboard meetings can be just as effective because everyone can use the whiteboard at the same time and have full visibility of it at the same time. Next, let’s review some whiteboard tools to use in your video conference meetings.
Remote whiteboard tools
One great thing about Zoom is that a whiteboard tool is built into the video conferencing software. If you use Zoom for your remote meetings, then you don’t need to look any further for a whiteboard tool. To access the Zoom whiteboard, click the Screen Share button and then click Whiteboard. One of the features we like about this tool is that other participants can annotate and participate by writing on the board (if allowed). It’s also nice because you can disable that feature if you want.
two. Microsoft whiteboard
If you’re not using Zoom, or prefer to use another whiteboard tool, Microsoft has a great option. With this tool, all team members can edit and comment directly on the screen in real time. The whiteboard is infinite too, which means you can draw, write, or add sticky notes as much as you need. You can also save your whiteboards, so you can continue using the tool as much as you like, while also going back to previous sessions.
Conceptboard is another remote whiteboard tool that you can use during your meetings. With this tool, you can view live cursors and everyone can collaborate at the same time. Additionally, this tool has video conferencing capabilities, so you can talk to your team while brainstorming.
Limnu is an online whiteboard tool whose realism is the best seller. It feels like a real whiteboard, but it has the features of the online whiteboard, like collaboration. Anyone can edit in real time, but can also limit the permissions if necessary. Also, there is a chat box feature that is useful for those who do not have edit permissions to give their point of view. The whiteboard is a great way to collaborate and brainstorm with your team. And the best part is that you don’t have to be in person to have collaborative meetings. With remote whiteboard tools, you can brainstorm just as easily.
